An idea for a website, ZApstore.co.za is currently a concept website. It would connect South Africans with the American app store on iTunes. (Most people would rather shop on the American store than the South African store because it has everything the South African store has, and more.)

The way to use ZApstore is to:

1. Open an iTunes account on iTunes.com (the American store – you would have to use an American address – say… the Ritz?)

2. Buy credit on ZApstore.

You would be emailed the verification number of a unique iTunes gift card voucher – bought by our american “agent”, you would enter the pin online and get shopping!

Pretty simple.

At the moment there are a couple of websites doing this, but ZApstore would be the best looking, most efficient and of course, most trusted.

This Cape Town-based promotions company specializes in promotional and corporate gifts, as well as hospitality and office procurement – a busy team! I learned so much working with them to bring what they had in mind into cyber-reality. Web design is very satisfying work.

The beauty of WordPress, (ok, one of the beauties) is that it’s very simple to set up part of the website for fresh content, (a blog) and create authors who have access to the website content management system through a user friendly portal. In this case, Leigh and Susan will use their website (instead of email) to publish the newsletters and special promotions Simply Something offers. It’s a great way to connect with and grow your audience.

My favorite part of this website was creating the colourful sliders for the homepage.

The playful and life-loving couple who are “The Yellow Kites” commissioned an illustration for their new record release. They used an innovative platform called dropcards.com – very intriguing.

It works like this: Upload the album and artwork to the dropcards.com website, receive the printed cards -each with a unique key to the download- enabling the card holder to download the music. The card contains the seed of a wild flower, so once the unique number is used up and the music downloaded, the card can be planted! (These cards are small – the size of a credit card.)

My favorite song by the Yellow Kites? “I wanna come back as a tree”

You can listen to some of their music on their myspace page.

This was a really fun job to work on. Journey’s Rest is a peaceful, little farm, not too far from one of South Africa’s few true microbreweries – Napier Breweries – For me, working on the website meant taking loads of photographs and then planning out all the clever copy I could craft about sparkling stars and floating sheep… while chilling in the pool. Working on the weekend is OKAY under those conditions.

The blue crane population in the Overberg really does seem to be flourishing (thanks to all the wheat! “The Overberg wheatbelt population of the blue crane (Anthropoides paradiseus) comprises approximately half the global population of this red-listed species.” Shaw, 2009) and Ryan and Nicola who own the farm asked me to design their logo around this, our National bird.

My favorite part of this website is the guestbook, which I think (as someone who used to manage a guesthouse…) is a fun and useful feature to have. Journey’s Rest Guest Cottages, floating somewhere in an open Overberg cloud of sheep.

This project was the combined effort of my husband and I while we were on holiday in India a few years ago.

We built this website for a not for profit organization called ‘Hands on Houses’. It is the work of his parents, who spend most of their time in India, living as missionaries and building specially engineered “Don Cook” houses for widows and needy folks. (They work in South India, hit most hard by the tsunami of 2004.)

My work was primarily to generate the artwork for this project. A worthy cause! People from all over the world go out to visit them and the villages they are helping in. Some go to paint houses, some to help build, some just to pray and some to teach the village kids.

India is a fascinating place, you might consider a “working” holiday with them too… For more information, visit their FaceBook Page or the Hands on Houses website.
